[The Living Church] November 17, 2005--A letter sent to the Archbishop of Canterbury and bearing the signature of 17 primates in attendance at the recent South to South meeting in Egypt questioned whether the official relationship between the state and the Church of England is “obsolete and a hindrance to the Gospel” given that homosexuals will be able to register civil partnerships effective Dec. 5. The letter, which was released while General Synod was in session and not read by the Most Rev. Rowan Williams until after it was released to the public, drew a rebuke from Lambeth Palace.
